It’s 6am and your alarm sounds. It wakes you from a deep sleep, and initially – you feel great. You sit up and turn to look out the window to get an indication of the weather conditions for the day ahead. At this moment you realise there is a problem, a big problem. You can’t move your neck, and there is a very sharp pain in your neck, like a nasty pinch, when you try to move it. It’s now getting worse, so you keep your neck perfectly still. But, it was totally fine when you went to bed! How could this be? What’s happened?

Waking up with a stiff neck, and a very sore neck, is good indication that your pillow (and your sleep position on pillow) could be better. How old is your pillow? Do you know? Have you ever had a pillow fitted by a physio in Sydney? Do you need a new pillow? How do you tell?

If you are waking up with neck pain, and it’s happened more than once, you have a problem that you need to fix. Yes, traditional ‘hands on’ physiotherapy (which we certainly offer, and love to do) can get your neck back to a 100% pain free state, with full movement and good strength… in a jiffy, but you also need to ‘get your night right’ – in order to prevent the issue from returning.

What does getting ‘your night right’ mean?

Each and every one of us should have a high quality foam pillow, produced by a reputable brand, fitted to our specific body shape. When fitting a pillow, we are mostly concerned with the length of your clavicle, or collarbone. Your head and neck should be held/supported in a nice, neutral position when on the fitted pillow in side lying, and atop your mattress. The density of your mattress (soft or plush vs firm) also has an impact on the size of the pillow that you will need. Some bodies also benefit from a contoured shape to the pillow, as opposed to the traditional or standard pillow shape.

So, what pillow is best for me – how do I know?

The only way to really determine what pillow is best for you is to simply lay down on plenty of them. It is obviously better if you have a musculoskeletal expert (a Sydney physio) sitting behind you, assessing the angles and curves of your neck as you rest on many of the said pillows. An Evoker physio, right here in Sydney CBD, can quite quickly tell you which pillow is best for you. Some pillows will look awful, whilst others will look as though they ‘fit like a glove’! You need to find your glove, and we are here to help you with that.

At Evoker Physio, we can help you find a high quality pillow, one that best suits your unique situation. Wouldn’t it be great to wake without the aches and pains?
