The simple fitness trend that’s getting Aussies moving

While many of us focus on lifting more, running further or completing more reps when working out, there’s one crucial component we may be overlooking: improving our mobility.

“It’s the blend of joint range, muscle flexibility, neuromuscular control and strength that lets you perform everyday tasks smoothly, from reaching overhead to getting out of a chair to running, lifting or playing sport,” said Evoker director and musculoskeletal physiotherapist Adam Monteith.

Often confused with flexibility, mobility is about being able to move a joint through a range of motion with control. It plays a vital role in injury prevention, reducing joint pain, increasing stability, improving posture and enhancing performance.

Adam Monteith, Founder & Director of Evoker Physio in Sydney CBD talks to the Daily Telegraph about getting Australian’s moving and what he finds works well.

Rising interest in mobility

With people tracking their health and fitness more closely, there has been an uptick in online searches for “mobility exercises” in the past five years, according to Google Trends data.

“We’ve absolutely seen a noticeable rise in people seeking help to improve their mobility over the past five years,” Mr Monteith said.

“At Evoker we treat a wide cross-section of Sydney professionals, and across that entire group there’s been a clear shift: people are far more aware of their physical health, and they’re no longer willing to accept feeling tight, stiff or restricted as a normal part of life.”

Move it or lose it

But how often should we be doing mobility work?

“Little and often is the key,” Mr Monteith said. “For most people, five to 10 minutes a day is enough to make a meaningful difference – especially if it’s done consistently. Mobility behaves like brushing your teeth: it keeps things clean, prevents problems and makes you feel better every single day.”

Even simple movement practices, like walking regularly, can make a big difference, explained Mr Murfitt.

“Finding practices where you can relax, whether that be in nature, slow walking, or just taking your body through ranges like a toe touch, squatting, bending over to the side is beneficial,” he said.

“Some of the people who age most gracefully are those who keep playing tennis or golf, or gardening, or those who have never had times where they weren’t crouching or doing deep squats.”

Meanwhile, Mr Monteith said taking steps to improve our mobility will pay off in the long run.

“Ultimately, our lifestyle isn’t going to slow down, so our approach to movement needs to level up. When people improve their mobility, they don’t just reduce pain — they feel lighter, more capable, more confident and more like themselves again,” he said.
