How much muscle would your patient lose in eight weeks of non-weight-bearing?
In this episode, Geoff Kaplan, PT, ATC, SCS, CSCS shares his extensive experience in NFL sports medicine, focusing on his pioneering use of blood flow restriction (BFR) therapy and its evolution from rehab to performance enhancement. Discover how BFR has transformed athlete recovery and performance strategies in professional sports.
In late 2014, Geoff Kaplan took a risk almost nobody in his position would have taken. He was the head athletic trainer for the Houston Texans. His patient was Jadeveon Clowney — the No. 1 overall pick in that year’s draft, eight weeks strict non-weight-bearing after cartilage surgery. He along with the team surgeon Dr Walt Lowe saw an ESPN segment with Johnny discussing BFR for combat casualties. The tool they wanted to use had essentially no track record in professional sport, let alone a No. 1 draft pick.
